Barley Grass - RodrigoPeres.com

11 x more calcium than milk
30 x more B1 than milk
22 x more iron than spinach
As much protein per ounce as a steak
7 x more vitamin C  than orange

Hard to believe? But it is true!

After a client asked me what my thoughts were about Barley Grass, I decided to research and write about it.

Barley Grass (Hordeum Vulgare) has been a favourite natural product among health enthusiasts for centuries, and considered as supper-food (more on supper-food later, stay tuned). You can find it in the form of powder, liquid, caps or you can simply grow your own on your kitchen window for free.

Its medicinal and food use dates back to 7000 BC, the plant species was used in the treatment of skin, liver, blood, and GI disorders. Ancient Greeks used the mucilage derived from the cereal to treat GI inflammations. Gladiators ate barley for strength and stamina. The Roman physician Pliny used barley as part of a ritualized cure for boils.

► Nutritional Values
Barley grass has the most nutritional value if the plant is young when harvested. Barley grass is the only vegetation on earth that can actually supply nutritional support for ANY age individual. In juice form, it is about 45% protein and because it's not animal protein, it isn't full of the fat our bodies don't need.

According to many reference sites barley grass contains a number of vitamins, including B1, B2, B6, B12, Folic Acid, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Vitamin K.

In addition, barley grass contains over 13 different minerals, including Calcium, Iron, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Potassium, Copper and Zinc.

Barley grass actually has all the nutrients our bodies will ever need. Barley Grass has 20 amino acids, 12 vitamins and 13 minerals. Barley grass contains other constituents like chlorophyll, protein, fibre and a unique source of enzymes like SOD or Superoxide Dismutase and P4D1.

► Antioxidants and Chlorophyll
Barley grass can help to scavenge free radicals in our bodies and offers a number of benefits for disease prevention as well as helping to improve the overall health of our bodies. It plays an important part in mediating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and this can help to minimize certain diseases such as rheumatoid synovitis, arthritis, and gout.

Barley grass also contains chlorophyll, which is a natural detoxifier. Chlorophyll helps to stimulate red blood cells, improve our blood oxygenation, and can even accelerate wound healing and tissue growth.

► USE
Many claims have been made regarding the
health benefits of barley grass supplements, suggested benefits include:
~ Improves stamina

~ Sexual energy
~ Boosting Energy
~ Reduce Fatigue
~ Improved Immune Response
~ Detoxification of pollutants
~ Relieving inflammation and inflammation-related pain
~ Arthritis and relief from Arthritis Pain
~ Treatment of Asthma
~ Helps to combat blood clots
~ Helps to combat cancer
~ Longevity
~ Anti-Aging
~ Skin Health
~ Sleep Improvement
~ Helps to treat migraine
~ Helps to relieve stomach and gastrointestinal disorders
~ Improves the health of diabetic patients
~ Delay or prevent blood vessel damage
~ Reduce Cholesterol
~ HIV Infection
~ Weight Loss
~ Hypertension
~ Heart disease
~ Kidney problems
~ Liver Detoxification (by the way, my next blog)

A daily intake of barley glass lessens the work your body has to do to reap the nutrient rewards. For example, the vitamin C, calcium and iron you get from eating one orange have to go through an enzyme conversion process to achieve the highest amount of nutritional value. Drinking barley grass is a shortcut to this conversion process and your body's enzymes don't have to convert the vitamins.

► Research
~ Type 2 diabetes mellitus
In a 2010 medical study, it was suggested that medicinal plants might have therapeutic effects on complex diseases such as diabetes. Barley grass powder was selected because of its reported benefits. The experimental group of diabetics took 1.2 g of barley grass capsules every day for sixty days. The control group took no supplementation. No other changes were made, and no other alternative measures were taken. The patients' fasting blood sugar and lipid profiles were taken at the beginning and end of the study.
Supplementing with barley grass powder caused a significant fall in the fasting blood sugar level of the experimental group. No change was noted in the control group. There was a 5.1% reduction in overall cholesterol levels after two months. The researchers also noted that the risk of coronary heart disease was significantly reduced in the diabetics who took barley grass supplements.

~ Cholesterol
In a clinical study involving men with high LDL and total blood cholesterol levels, taking 15 grams of barley grass extract daily significantly lowered cholesterol levels. In addition, HDL, which is commonly referred to as "happy" or "good" cholesterol, was increased by taking barley grass extract.

In-vitro demonstration shows that barley grass extract scavenges free radicals. Scientists think this is due to an exchange of hydrogen ions which makes the free radicals weaker.

~ Rheumatoid Arthritis
Laboratory studies using the blood and spinal fluid of rheumatoid arthritis patients noted that barley grass extract does exhibit antioxidant properties.

► Cancer Prevention
According to Drugs.com, barley grass can protect the tissue in our bodies against carcinogens and this can help to prevent cancer from developing. Drugs.com reports that science does not yet fully understand how this is possible, but it may be that the chlorophyll in barley grass helps to inactivate the cancer-causing agents.

Drugs.com reports that barley grass contains some antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, which is more concentrated in green barley juice. Superoxide dismutase helps to protect against radiation and free radicals that can cause cancer.
► Is Barley Grass safe?
Contraindications
Contraindications have not yet been identified.
But I can say that,
over-consumption can cause nausea and new users are cautioned to begin with small amounts. Like any food you are not used to, we probably can get funny stomach as well.

Pregnancy/nursing
Information regarding safety and efficacy in pregnancy and lactation is lacking.

Interactions
None well documented.

Side Effects
Although hypersensitivity to barley products typically is associated with the seed and not the green leaves or shoots, patients with celiac disease or other sensitivities to barley probably should avoid use of barley grass.

Toxicities
No data.

► NOT ALL BARLEY GRASS IS THE SAME… If not growing your own, make sure to buy
~ Harvested Young -
14 days old
~ Organic
~ 100% Pure Barley

PS: While some of these nutrients can be found in green vegetables, to achieve the levels of each your body requires would mean eating A LOT OF spinach, collards, kale, green beans and peppers etc... In juice form, by mixing just 1-2 teaspoons of barley glass with eight ounces of water or juice, you'll have all the green vegetable nutrients from one drink. Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwana, doesn't suggest ignoring your green vegetables, but supplementing them with powder, liquid or capsule to achieve the best barley grass health benefits.

PLEASE NOTE: Barley grass (this blog) should not be used as a substitute for standard treatment of any chronic condition.

Finally, after years of research on over 200 types of plants, including fruits, vegetables, grasses, and herbs, scientists have found that young barley grass is one of the most nutritionally balanced foods in nature.

If you ask me how I would eat/drink my barley grass? Well, I would start just by drink it in a form of pure juice first, till my body gets used to it and to distinguish the benefits barley grass has to offer.

After a few weeks I would probably start making cocktails.
As an example:
3 fresh squeezed oranges
1 Carrot (juiced)
1 Beetroot (juiced)
Crashed ice

I would try adding some fresh lemonade at some point as well.

By the way, lemonade in brazil “limonada” is made with lime “limão” not lemon and we never drink with direct sunshine.

If you make the cocktail/juice above, please let me know what you think!!!!

The obesity levels in the UK is 23% and 30% in the US. Obesity and overweight is two different things, so now imagine how many people are overweight??? Actually, 60.8% adults and 31.1 of children are overweight in the UK.
Overweight/obese diet “drugs”
is a BIG business, it has turned into a multibillion dollar industry in the United States and the UK is not far behind.

1 - But although diet pills promise a “quick fix”, can they deliver?
2 - Can they help you
 lose weight?
3 - If so, can they help you keep it off?
4 - Will you be healthier?
5 - Will it stop you from having a stroke, heart attack, lower your LDL?
6 - Does the
benefits in weight loss pills outweigh the side effects/health problems?
7 -
Who Should Use Prescription Diet Pills?
8 -
Lose Weight Safely and Sensibly

9 - Let me Analyse your Diet/Nutrition just email me

Several diet drugs over the last decade have been associated with:
~ Serious heart problems
~ Health-related issues
~ Deaths

► Diet drugs are available in several different forms including:
~ Prescription drugs > drugs such as Meridia and Xenical are only available with a doctor's prescription. They are carefully regulated by the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Centre for Drug Evaluation and Research, and their use is closely monitored by the prescribing doctor.
~ Over-the-counter drugs > drugs are available without a doctor's prescription, right in your local pharmacy/supermarket, and are also regulated by the FDA. According to AnneCollins.com, "Products considered by FDA to be over-the-counter weight control drugs [as opposed to dietary supplements] are primarily those containing the active ingredient phenylpropanolamine (PPA).
The FDA requested that drug manufacturers voluntary reformulate PPA-containing products in the wake of evidence that phenylpropanolamine can increase the risk of stroke, so there are few diet drugs on the market that still contain this ingredient. OTC drugs also fall under the jurisdiction of the FDA's Centre for Drug Evaluation and Research.
~ Herbal supplements > diet supplements are also available without a prescription. You'll typically find a huge variety of these in health food and nutrition stores as well as in regular supermarkets and they are often labelled "all natural" and are considered by the FDA to be food products as opposed to drugs. As such, they fall under the jurisdiction of the FDA's centre for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and are regulated differently from OTC drugs. ~ Herbal is also a selection of diet aids that are administered by patch, as a powder or in liquid form. These types of drugs may fall into any of the above categories -- it is only the delivery method that is unique.
Just to make sure you understand one thing – Weight Loss Supplements you buy from health shops, supermarkets or in another word “from the shelf anywhere”, they are NOT regulated (it can have anything inside or even nothing) as they are not classified as a drug, instead, they see it as a dietary “food” supplement.
► HOW DO THEY WORK?
Different diet pills work in different ways depending on which ingredients they contain.
Appetite suppressants such assibutramine (Meridia),diethylpropion (Tenuate) and phentermine (Adipex-P, Fastin, Anoxine-AM, etc.) affect the appetite-regulating region of the brain called the hypothalamus. They work by blocking the re-uptake of the chemicals serotonin and norepinephrine, which create that feeling of satiety you get after eating a big meal. With more of these chemicals circulating in your brain, you feel full, so you eat less.
Prescription fat blockers, such as orlistat (Xenical), inhibit the action of an enzyme called lipase. When we eat foods (real food) with fat in them, lipase normally breaks down the fat when it gets to the intestinal tract. With a lipase inhibitor in effect, a percentage of the fat ingested is removed from the body through bowel movements instead of being broken down and absorbed.
Others - Many prescription drugs are used as diet aids even though that was not their intended purpose.
Some antidepressants are used "off-label" as diet aids because they have been shown in studies to help patients lose weight and keep it off for several months. Researchers are also studying certain drugs normally used to treat
epilepsy (topiramate and zonisamide) and diabetes (metformin) for their weight-loss potential.
Other promising drugs affect appetite-related hormones. One blocks ghrelin, which the stomach sends to the brain to increase appetite. Another mimics a hormone called PYY, which tells the body it's full.
► Who Should Use Prescription Diet Pills?
Prescription diet pills does work, but they are not for someone who wants to shed a few pounds to fit into a holiday party dress or look good in a bikini or toooooo lazy to exercise.
Only people who are "obese" (BMI of 30+) or who have a history of high blood pressure or diabetes due to weight problem are good candidates for prescription diet medications, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

► Do Diet Pills Really Work?
Many over-the-counter diet pill manufacturers say their product will help you see miraculous weight loss, like losing up to 30 pounds in 30 days, without diet or exercise. A few pills, especially (such as Meridia and Xenical), have been shown in clinical studies to help dieters shed a few pounds, again “few” pounds.
Even the most effective diet pills (over the counter/prescription by a doctor) are only meant to be taken for a short period of time -- less than six months. During that time, doctor-prescribed weight-loss drugs can trim anywhere from 5 to 22 pounds, or up to 10% of your body weight.

Here is the small print that no one reads - HOWEVER, after six months, your body develops a tolerance to these drugs' effects, and weight loss plateaus.
After that, if you don't also follow a healthy eating and exercise plan, the weight will COME RIGHT BACK and most of the time MORE than before - one thing that I always say is: if it is going to come back “worse” or you are going to gain more than when you started with, there is no point in starting in the first place.
Is it worth it? Just for the sake of a few days…

The majority (if not all) of the pill you can get from the shelf, and products you see on the INTERNET
and TV are for products that have the UN factor.
~ Unregulated
~ Untested
~ Unproven
~ Unhealthy
Instead of losing weight, you are losing money. It does not work, and worse still, the side effects!

► Side Effects of Diet-pill Use

Different diet pills contain different ingredients, so their side effects vary.

Fat blockers may cause uncomfortable cramping, gas and diarrhoea. As well as reducing the body's absorption of essential vitamins and nutrients.
Appetite suppressants raise blood pressure and heart rate. This increases the risk of HEART ATTACK and cardiac arrest and If you already suffer from high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat or heart disease, you are asking to go to the other side quicker!!! Other, more minor side effects include constipation, headache, dry mouth and insomnia (because the chemicals in these drugs also influence sleep patterns).
Herbal diet pills, even though they're "all natural," can have potentially dangerous side effects depending upon their ingredients. "Herbal" or “Natural” doesn't necessarily mean "SAFE". If you see a nice flower, would you eat it?
Also, because they are considered part of the food industry and are therefore regulated differently by the FDA, there is no guarantee that they can live up to their manufacturers' claims.

► Most of the Weight Loss Dietary Supplements use ingredients like:
Hoodia Gordonii  - This plant is used by the San people (Bushmen) to suppress the appetite on long hunting trips in the Kalahari Desert
Açai – A Brazilian berry, normally eaten as ice-cream or smoothy for energy and calories as well as antioxidant qualities.
Green Tea -
Tea consumption has its legendary origins in China of more than 4,000 years ago with many health benefits – REAL Green Tea is made solely from the leaves of Camellia sinensis that have undergone minimal oxidation during processing.
~ Bee Pollen -
Bee pollen has been used to enhance energy, memory and performance. Serious allergic reactions to bee pollen have been reported as well, including potentially life-threatening anaphylaxis and organ toxicity.
~
Chocamine - Extract of cocoa used to improve focus and concentration, an energy booster. Caffeine might be added to some products.
~
Citrus Aurantium - A tree native to southern Vietnam, also known as bitter orange extract, Citrus Aurantium gained popularity in 2004 after the banning of ephdra because of its similarities to the compound - Increase thermogenesis along with decreasing appetite. Some peoples might experience headaches, upset stomach, increase in heart rate and blood pressure.
~
White Kidney Bean Extract – It has the ability to block starches, so in effect it blocks the alpha-amylase enzyme, which plays an important role in digestion. Alpha-amylase is required for the metabolism of starchy carbohydrates. There's some concern that use of white bean extract may trigger certain minor side effects (including nausea, bloating, gas, and diarrhoea.
~ Ephedra - Ephedra sinica
is an herb with a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine for asthma, bronchitis, allergies and cold and flu symptoms. It is been banned since the 2004 in weight loss supplements due to many deaths as it has similar in structure to amphetamine.
~
Bioperine - Bioperine is an herbal supplement that contains piperine, an extract from black pepper that is responsible for the pungency of pepper extract, is used in sports supplements to enhance the bioavailability of nutrients through increased absorption. The most common side effects of piperine are gastrointestinal problems such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
~ Cayenne - The main active ingredient in cayenne pepper is capsaicin. It is said to be a "thermogenic chemical" which will help speed your metabolism and decrease your appetite. If eating the pepper, it can cause burning in the mouth and throat, and can cause the nose to run and eyes to water. People with ulcers, heartburn, or gastritis should use any cayenne-containing product cautiously as it may worsen their condition.

► A lot of the Weight Loss supplement will:~ Contain high doses of caffeine like caffeine itself or green tea and guarana which will raise your heart rate~ Weigh loss related to the loss of WATER (caffeine) , by losing water you are going to be dehydrated – you are not losing fat~ Weight loss related to NO EATING, food is good, food is energy, from food we get ALL the nutrients which are essential for a healthy life. No one can live without the B-Vitamins, Fat-Soluble Vitamins and Iron, zinc etc… by not eating you are going to be MALNOURISHED, therefore more prone to infections and ill health.~ The pills won’t strengthen your heart, your back or improve your VO2. The pills won’t keep the weight off – but exercise will.
There have been reports of over 1000s of Deaths and Heart Related Diseases due to Weight Loss Pills. Some like Sibutramine, Xenedrine, Dexatrim,  Zantrex-3, Fenfluramine (Fen-Phen) and Ephedra.

► Lose Weight Safely and Sensibly

To lose weight safely and sensibly, you need to TACKLE the “poor eating habits” and “lack of exercise” that helped you gain weight in the first place.
If you concentrate on making long-term changes to your diet and lifestyle, you won’t need to resort to quick fix remedies, which doesn’t really fix anything.
By taking supplements of any kind to lose or to gain (protein shakes, pill etc.) does not turn a bad eating habits into a good diet.
But if you are weak (mind) and you still can’t resist the fantastic promises, at least, PLEASE, avoid those products that make outrageous claims. If a product sounds to be good to be true, then it probably is!

SMOKING - Before/After a Workout

SMOKING - Before/After a Workout and in General!

A lot of times while on shift in the gym, I come across that horrible cigarette/nicotine smell. I think to myself, someone JUST SMOKED outside before coming in. The smell is on their clothes, hair, hands and worse, you can really smell it when they start to PERSPIRE on the Treadmill and others just by doing a few weights.

Hold on…

Let me remind you about some of the benefits of exercising again, and it is not just about losing weight or gaining muscle mass!

EXERCISE:

 > Strengthens your heart and make your cardiovascular and respiratory systems FUNCTION MORE EFFICIENTLY (this should be number one on your list).

 >  It lowers your blood pressure.
 >  It decreases your LDL while raising your HDL.
 >  Lower your risk for STROKE, HEAR ATTACK and HEART DISEASE.
 >  It reduces your risk for certain CANCERS and DIABETES.
 >  It increases your flexibility, stamina and mobility improving your lifestyle.

WELL… Sad enough SMOKING UNDOES all the health benefits you gain from exercising.

~ Smoking decreases lung capacity and increases phlegm build-up, the latter of which causes persistent coughing associated with smoking. Lighting up after a workout negates the pulmonary benefits you gain from exercising.

~ Smoking increases your LDL or bad cholesterol and lowers your HDL or good cholesterol. The nicotine from cigarettes damages your blood vessels and increases your risk of developing atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries and allows the build-up of fatty residues inside them. Smoking also increases the risk of developing thrombosis, or the formation of blood clots in your blood vessels. Smoking constricts blood vessels, resulting in reduced blood flow to the heart and organs.

~ Smoking weakens your immune system and makes you more susceptible to illness and infections such as sinusitis and rhinitis -- inflammation of the inner lining of the nasal passages -- and pneumonia.

CHILDREN EXPOSED to cigarette smoke are more susceptible to middle ear infections and MANY other problems. (how can anyone smoke in the house next to babies/children or worse in the car with the kids at the back?)

~ During exercise your brain releases chemicals called endorphins that induce a sense of well-being and reduce pain. Thus, working out makes you feel better and relieve stress. You may think smoking after a workout enhances this effect, but what feels like relaxation to you is simply just a return to the unstressed state non-smokers experience all of the time.

TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT? Think again, you will spend less time on a CV Machine (e.g. Treadmill) as you are going to struggle with stamina and you won’t burning as much calories. Your total gym training will be impaired and you will have a much less output “intensity” during training.

TRYING TO GAIN MUSCLE? Think again, you won’t be able to push as hard and you won’t recover as fast so you can’t train as often and if you do before the muscle has recovered, GAIN is the last thing you will see. You need a good OXYGEN supply to the working muscles and a good BLOOD flow reach in nutrients. But remember smoking will reduce all that. Smoking reduces maximum oxygen intake by 10% and can damage testes cells, which produce “testosterone”.

TRYING TO IMPROVE CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS? Think again, when the body is involved in fairly strenuous exercise, such as running, swimming or playing sports, it needs more oxygen to be delivered to the muscles it is using. Both bronchospasm and increased phlegm production cause airway obstruction, decreasing overall lung function, which then leads to poor physical performance. Smoking has been shown to stunt lung development in teen-aged girls, which limits their adult breathing capacity. In addition to affecting your present fitness state, smoking can limit your future physical potential when done at a young age.

Carbon monoxide has a double negative effect; firstly in the lungs it decreases the oxygen quantity absorbed by the blood. Secondly, it also reduces the quantity of oxygen carried to the muscles by the blood. Oxygen is the keep component for the proper functioning of the energy systems of your body. Hence it affects the energy production and your performance.
The most important thing in any type of training is the final Rep, the 3-5 minutes extra of cardio or the last sprint. Significantly there is a decrease in the probability in pushing the last Rep or the sprint at the end due to smoking.

Smoking decreases the growth and functioning of your lungs hence leaving you breathless when you REQUIRE AIR THE MOST.

Not to mention you’re putting an enormous strain on your “most important muscle”, your HEART.

Smoking is good for:
Swollen Gums, Bad Breath and Teeth to Fall Out
Cardiovascular Disease
Heart Damage
Cancer
Inadequate Testosterone Level
Fertility Problems
Erectile Dysfunction
Poor Insulin Metabolism
High Blood Pressure
Pale Skin and Wrinkles
PLUS another 1000s of other things… ahhhh less money!

Passive Smoking:

Children who grow up in a home where one or both of their parents smoke have twice the risk of getting asthma and asthmatic bronchitis. They also have a higher risk of developing allergies. Infants under two years old are more prone to severe respiratory infections and cot death.

For adults, passive smoking seems to increase the risk of lung cancer, and a potential for an increased risk of heart disease (tests not yet conclusive).

BY STOPPING:
Just After 20 minutes:
Your blood pressure will decrease.
Your heart rate will decrease.
The temperature of your hands and feet will increase.
After 8 hours:
The level of carbon monoxide in your blood will drop to normal.
The level of oxygen in your blood will increase to normal.
After 24 hours:
Your chance of heart attack will decrease.
After 48 hours:
Your nerve endings will start to regrow.
Your ability to smell and taste will improve.
After 2 weeks to 3 months:
Your circulation will improve.
Your lung function will improve.
Aerobic activity (e.g., walking/running) will become easier.
After 1 to 9 months:
Symptoms including coughing, sinus congestion, fatigue, and
shortness of  breath will decrease.
After 1 year:
Excess risk of coronary heart disease will decrease to half that of a smoker.
After 5 to 15 years:
Risk of stroke will decrease to that of people who have never smoked.
After 10 years:
Risk of lung cancer will decrease to half that of continuing smokers.
Risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, oesophagus, bladder, kidney, and
pancreas will decrease.
Risk of ulcers will decrease.
After 15 years:
Risk of coronary heart disease will decrease to that of
people who have never smoked.
Risk of death will decrease to near the level of people who have never smoked.
