MOTIVATION TO EXERCISE - PERFECT WORKOUT - PERFECT WORLD

What happens when you decide to do a workout?

RodrigoPeres.com
In a perfect world, there's a perfect time (which you, of course, have available) where you get your perfectly organized self (who, of course, is always on top of things) and go have yourself a perfect workout.
In the real world, there is no perfect time or perfect organization or perfect anything. In fact, your mind will argue with you, going through a series of mental gymnastics that, were your body to try those moves, would result in permanent injury.
I know you're tired, bored and don't have time — but we also know those are just the excuses that keep you from hitting the gym.

Here's an example:
"Okay, I'll train after work. But, wait, I forgot to wash my gym clothes, so that means I'll have to do laundry before bed. And I don't have anything to snack on before my workout, so I have to stop by the store on the way to work, which means I have to leave 15 minutes early, which means getting up 15 minutes early, which means going to bed 15 minutes early and..."

A training session seems like an easy prospect on its face, but most of us have to jump through some logistical hoops to make it work. There's obviously a certain amount of planning involved, but we sometimes make it much more complicated than it has to be.

Are you doing this to deliberately sabotage yourselves?
Most of my clients constantly struggle with a chaotic morning schedule, a chronic fatigue after work and a vague promise of "I'll train, I will do my diary, I will use my phone app for the calories, I will do this and I will do that… but when I find the time."
The truth is, do you REALLY want to exercise, do you REALLY want to be healthier, leaner, and stronger?

If it is a YES, then STOP the excuses and find a solution!!!

  • Eat early - Turn of your TV well before bed  - Get some sleep
  • Put your workout clothes next to your bed the night before. Get up and put it on before leaving the bedroom. Brush your teeth, splash water on your face. Do NOT look at yourself in the mirror, as your tired face will try to convince you to go back to bed.
  • Don’t think too much (day dreaming around the house) just close the door and go
  • If exercising at home JUST push whatever buttons make the treadmill go and begin walking. Keep walking until at least 10 minutes has passed. Do all of this without thinking about it. As you mind will say - This is awful, I'm tired, I want to go back to bed -  just say to yourself, "I'm not allowed to think about that."
  • If exercising after work – DO NOT GO HOME – go straight to the gym. As you might never leave house again.
  • Listen to music - Plan your tracks > warm up , main workout and cool down
  • Make a date with a workout buddy – are you going to let him/her down?
  • Write your goals down and set a date to accomplish them
  • Have a calendar on the wall with days/times you are exercising. Set it on your phone, tablet etc… Set a reminder!
  •  It takes some practice and, of course, it is not always perfect, but taking the mind out of it makes it easier just to get going. Sometimes you really do have to – JUST DO IT.

Remember,
Winners find a way, losers find an excuse!

How does your mind try to talk you out of exercising and how do you deal with it? How you do it?

Shortcuts to WEIGHT LOSS - 4, 4 minutes away... Tabata Training

Shortcut to the land of WEIGHT LOSS - 4, 4 minutes away...

How are you all? It has been quite some time since my last article but I was very busy setting up my PT Studio, I share the premises with my wife, (check PhysioFix.co.uk for all of your injuries, aches and pains), the studio (Performance Centre) is 90% ready... I have a really cool wallpaper, the ocean and sky scenery. it took me 5 days to do it all and over 3hrs to do just two of the panels as the wall is curved a full of edges. It was
Battling Rope Tabata - RodrigoPeres.com
worth the back pain, it looks great now.

Anyway, where were we? Ehhhh, oh yes, shortcut to weight loss in 4 minutes, let’s get started.

Your shredding shortcut is not for the weak, and definitely not for the faint of heart! You must put all you have into it… ALL of it!

I always say to my clients in Launceston and members of the gym in Plymouth, there is NO shortcut when it comes to losing weight. #1 Eat right, #2 Train hard and often #3 Be patient #4 No quick fix as it will leave you a scar on the long run. However, if you already have a “reasonable” level of fitness and looking for a shortcut here it is!

By the way, it doesn't involve crazy diet or pills that are a waste of money and time.

Many people spend between 30-90min doing brutal cardiovascular workouts: running, biking, swimming, straining and sweating, all in the name of getting lean. In fact, you might not even be overweight, you just want to lose that last flab bit for summer or especial occasion. What about if I tell you, you can do it all in just 4 minutes?! Well let's say 11-14min, which include warm up and cool down.

I will list a few workouts you can do in 4 minutes that will change your opinion about doing long boring CV workouts. Were you told that to burn fat you have to exercise at low intensity for a longer period of time? Think again!

A bit of history first!
Like most great discoveries happens by chance/accident (like Brazil), Dr Izumi Tabata (田畑 泉), wasn't seeking bodyweight effects. Instead, he was trying to help the Japanese national speed-skating team gain a powerful leg up on their competition with an idea pioneered by the team’s coach, Irisawa Koichi.
The subjects in Tabata’s study, conducted at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, adhered to the “Tabata” method five times per week; a second group performed only steady-state cardio for the same duration.
After six weeks, the Tabata athletes increased their VO2 max more significantly than the steady-state trainers; they also gained 28% anaerobic capacity while the steady staters made no anaerobic gains.

It was a sound victory for interval-style cardio. Until then the entrenched thinking was that you’d have to focus on one facet during exercise — either endurance or maximum power. Dr. Tabata’s discovery shattered this thinking, and was viewed as a genuine breakthrough; since then his method has proliferated in fitness, sports and even certain pure muscle-building circles.

HOW TO DO IT.

PLEASE NOTE: If you prone or have a history of stroke/heart attack, high blood pressure consult with you DOCTOR first. Tabata protocol should be approached with due caution. Yes it is SHORT but don’t let the duration fool you!

1 - If not using CV machine, use your phone/computer/tablet and set the timer to beep every 20 and 10 seconds x 8.

20sec = HIGH INTENSITY  >  >  >  all-out max speed/intensity/effort
10sec = Rest
X 8
Beginners and not so fit, just do 3-6 intervals and progress slowly
Alternating days -  3-5 x per week - 24/48hrs rest

2 – Make sure to warm up properly, otherwise I can guarantee you will pull a muscle during the session. If you include sprints at 17-20kph, warm up doing a few at 13, 14 and 15kph first.

3 – Remember commit to it… keep focus! ALL-OUT MAX EFFORT for 20sec. Your mind is going to shout at you STOP but don’t listen, DON’T GIVE UP. (When your mind tells you to stop eating cakes/chocolates, do you listen?)
It will only trigger the necessary adaptations if you push beyond the limit.

4 – Choose your exercise – first few sessions use one type of exercise at a time, when you become proficient, you can incorporate 2, 3, 4 exercises on the same session.

5 – Cool Down

Exercise Example

CV

Treadmill > Set the speed to the maximum YOU can do. If 12kph is your max, that is fine, but if you can sprint at 20kph you must do it at 20kph.
After 20 seconds of ALL-OUT MAX effort just stand on the sides of the treadmill and rest for 10sec (must be only 10sec). Repeat another 7 times for a total of 8.

Road Running > Make sure to set your phone to beep! Sprint and get to your TOP speed within a few seconds and maintain it for 20sec. Walk for 10sec and repeat. Simple! (if you are not dribbling by the end of it, it wasn’t hard enough)

Bicycle > Set your resistance, medium to heavy, if it is too light you will bounce all over the place and it won’t be challenging enough. Adjust as you go along… if cycling outdoors, just keep you cadence/rpm high and in heavy gear as well.
Slow down for 10sec and repeat.

Body Weight Exercise | Resistance
Start by choosing simple exercises and progress to more complicated ones.

You can do the Tabata Training by performing Press ups only, Squats, Jumping Squats, Split Lunges, Sit ups, Pull ups, Chin ups etc…
You can make it a bit more functional. Burpees (one of the best), Burpees+Push ups and so on.
Combined
Sprint > rest > Push ups > rest > repeat 4x
Burpees > rest > Sit ups > rest > repeat 4x
Cycle > rest > Split Lunges > rest > repeat 4x (I dare you!)
Row > rest > Shoulder Press > rest > repeat 4x
Or
Sprint > rest > Push ups > rest > Row > rest > Sit ups > rest > repeat x 2
Burpees > rest > Pull ups > rest > Cycle > rest > Jumping Squat > rest > repeat x 2

Do you have more time?
If yes, then do 4 minutes x3

1 – Sprint 8 intervals of 20/10sec
REST 1 full minute
2 – Upper Body Exercise 8 x 20/10sec
REST 1 full minute
3 – Lower Body Exercise 8 x 20/10sec

Get the idea! Now you can even build your own Tabata Training.

Remember
> Check with your doctor first!
> Warm up
> 20 seconds MUST BE at max effort
> Panting not fainting
> Only rest the 10 seconds
> Focus
> Progress slowly, 4-6 sets, just one exercise
> KEEP FORM, posture, technique
> Cool Down
> Rest between sessions

Did you know
After 6 weeks, the tabata athletes increased their VO2 Max more significantly than the steady-state trainers. They also gained 28% more anaerobic capacity while the steady staters made no anaerobic gains.

During a “normal” cardiovascular workout, most people keep their heart rate inside the TRAINING ZONE, in most cases that is 40-90% of their maximum heart rate. Guess what, Tabata’s subjects worked beyond their target heat rate zone, specifically to 170% of their VO2 max.

Can Vitamin C Prevent or Treat Cold Symptoms or is it a Myth?

Do you feel like this sometimes? r-p-t.co.uk
Can Vitamin C Prevent or Treat Cold Symptoms or is it a Myth?
Colds are the leading cause of doctor's visits and the number one reason for absences from work and school.
Vitamin C was first touted for the common cold in the 1970s but studies started as early as 1747 for scurvy. read here…
Vitamin C is probably one of the most well-known vitamins out there. At the very first sign of cold symptoms, many people reach for a bottle of vitamin C supplement. Do you? Vitamin C is such a widely accepted treatment for the common cold that we seek it out in lots of products such as fortified juices, cough drops, and tea.
In the past 40 years, numerous epidemiological and placebo-controlled trials have examined the effect of vitamin C supplementation on the prevention and treatment of colds. More than 30 clinical trials with over 10,000 participants have examined the effects of taking daily vitamin C in doses up to 2 g/day.
Overall, experts have found little to no benefit in using vitamin C (disapoiting isnt it?) to prevent or treat the common cold. A review of data from a variety of databases found that regular vitamin C consumption may reduce the duration of cold symptoms in both adults and children, but it does not decrease the severity of cold symptoms
In 2010, researchers looked at all the scientific studies and found that taking vitamin C every day did not prevent the number of colds that a person got. In some cases, however, it did lead to a slight improvement in symptoms.
HOWEVER, IF THE VITAMIN C IS STARTED AFTER COLD SYMPTOMS APPEAR, THERE WAS NO BENEFIT SEEN AT ALL.
But highly physically active people training in stressful and extreme conditions such as soldiers training in the Arctic and marathon runners (2-3 gym sessions is not highly-active) may benefit from supplementation. In this group, taking vitamin C on a daily basis cut their risk of catching a cold in half. Top 10 Foods Highest in Vitamin C read here…
A wise man once said
“Prevention is better than cure”
but do we listen?
Read more about BODY MOT = Physiotherapy and Massage here…

100 miles per hour & 100,000 germs into the air  |  r-p-t.co.k
So what does all this mean?
I am sure you don’t want to hear this but taking vitamin C every day, you are not likely to have any fewer colds. However, you may have colds that are a day or two shorter and it do not prevent a cold or affect symptom severity.
Do you want to be more disappointed? Read on… Seven (7) separate studies showed that when vitamin C was started after cold symptoms appeared, vitamin C was no more effective than placebo at shortening the duration of cold symptoms.

Is Vitamin C Safe to Take?

In general, vitamin C is safe to take when ingested through food sources such as fruits and vegetables. (Top 10 Foods Highest in Vitamin C read here…) For most people, taking vitamin C supplements in the recommended amounts is also safe.
Higher doses of vitamin C greater than 2,000 milligrams per day for adults say cause kidney stones, nausea, and diarrhoea.
If you're unsure about taking vitamin C for colds, talk to your health care provider. Your doctor can answer any questions (we all hope so) about vitamin C and colds and about any other dietary supplement that you are taking.

Top 10 Foods Highest in Vitamin C - are you thinking about oranges?

Top 10 Foods Highest in Vitamin C – Are you thinking about oranges?

RodrigoPeres.com
Most of the time when someone talks about Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C), oranges spring to mind… You may be surprised but oranges do not rank No.1.

When talking about vitamin C, is probably because they are trying to get rid of a cold (does it really prevent cold? Read below) but there are more to vitamin C then just maintaining a strong immune system.

Vitamin C is an essential nutrient required by the body for the development and maintenance of:

> Scar Tissue
·      > Blood Vessels
·      > Cartilage

Vitamin C is also necessary for creating:
·       > ATP
·       > Dopamine
·       > Peptide Hormones
·       > Tyrosine

As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin C helps lessen oxidative stress to the body and is thought to lower cancer risk.

Most forms of cardiovascular disease, joint disease, cancer, eye disease, thyroid disease, liver disease, and lung disease require special emphasis on vitamin C intake. The process of ageing itself requires special attention to vitamin C. In addition to these broader categories, several specific health conditions also require special emphasis on vitamin C.

These specific health conditions include:
  • Acne
  • Alcoholism
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Asthma
  • Autism
  • Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Irritable bowel disease
  • Parkinson's disease

DID YOU KNOW?
Vitamin C serves a predominantly protective role in the body. As early as the 1700's, vitamin C was referred to as the "antiscorbutic factor," since it helped prevent the disease called scurvy. This disease was first discovered in British sailors, whose sea voyages left them far away from natural surroundings for long periods of time. Their body stores of vitamin C fell below 300 milligrams, and their gums and skin lost the protective effects of vitamin C. Recognizing limes as a good shipboard source of vitamin C, the British sailors became known as "limeys" for carrying large stores of limes aboard ship.

How do cooking, storage, or processing affect vitamin C?
Vitamin C is highly sensitive to air, water, and temperature. About 25% of the vitamin C in vegetables can be lost simply by blanching (boiling or steaming the food for a few minutes). This same degree of loss occurs in the freezing and unthawing of vegetables and fruits. Cooking of vegetables and fruits for longer periods of time (10-20 minutes) can result in a loss of over one half the total vitamin C content. When fruits and vegetables are canned and then reheated, only 1/3 of the original vitamin C content may be left. Consumption of vitamin C-rich foods in their fresh, raw form is the best way to maximize vitamin C intake.

How do other nutrients interact with vitamin C?
Vitamin C has significant interactions with several key minerals in the body.
Supplemental intake of vitamin C at gram-level doses can interfere with copper metabolism. Conversely, vitamin C can significantly enhance iron uptake and metabolism, even at food-level amounts.
Vitamin C also has important interactions with other vitamins. Excessive intake of vitamin A, for example, is less toxic to the body when vitamin C is readily available. Vitamin C is involved in the regeneration of vitamin E, and these two vitamins appear to work together in their antioxidant effect.

How much should I be taking?
The U.S. Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine recommend a daily intake for:
Men 18+ years old = 90 milligrams daily
Women 18+ years old = 75 milligrams daily
Pregnant women 18+ years old = 85 milligrams daily
Breastfeeding women 18+ years old = 120 milligrams daily
Recently, some experts have questioned whether the recommended daily intake should be raised. Others have recommended higher intake in some individuals, such as smokers, in whom an additional 35 milligrams daily has been recommended by some.
The upper limit of intake (UL) should not exceed 2,000 milligrams daily in men or women more than 18 years old (including pregnant or breastfeeding women).

Does Vitamin C prevent cold? Fact or Fiction?

You will be surprised but it… read more here
